MONASTERY SANT PAU DEL CAMP

Since the early days of the "Foundation of Barcino" there was a village surrounding the monastery and outside the walls, at the foot of the mountain of Montjuic, the vast plain dedicated to grow the vegetables. This plain was called "El Camp" ("the field" in Catalan).

The monastery was founded by Count Wilfred Borell and build between 897 and 911. Since it's foundation and until the looting by the troops of Al-Mansur in 985 there is no written documentation. The noble Geribert Guitard and his wife Rotlandis rebuild the monastery and joined it with the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallés to create a new monastic community.

The old church was renovated again in the thirteenth century in a Roman style, with a ship, three apses and a dome. Carved stone and marble was used in the noble parts and for the cover and the top of the facade. On the contrary, the walls were build with simple blocks of smaller size.

The construction of the cloister followed later. It formas a square courtyard with reinforcements. From its cusped arches you still can see some of the Moorish / Arabic tradition.

You can find the monastery in the Raval district, on the street that bears his name: Sant Pau, at number 101.

Admission is only 3 € and we truly recommend it to you because despite despite its simplicity, it is precious and a oasis of silence in the heart of Barcelona.
