Bohemian Barcelona

Discover the city’s modernista bars and their artists on a night-time tour

With this itinerary, we will make you discover some of the most important Modernisme-style bars after-dark. Unknown places frequented by Picasso, Casas, Russiñol among others, will allow us to listen to the stories of entertainment, bohemian life and perversion lurking within their walls.

One of the defining characteristics of Catalonia’s home-grown art nouveau, modernisme, was the creation of unique architectural spaces that brought together all the arts in spectacular fashion. On this tour you will discover these places, many of them off the usual tourist trails but still in use today, that will reveal the atmosphere and splendour of modernista bohemian life.

As you enjoy a drink, you’ll find out about the complex society that gave rise to one of the most intense periods in Barcelona’s history.

Itinerary: Casa Almirall, London Bar, Bar Muy Buenas, Café de l’Òpera, Taverna Els Quatre Gats, El Paraigües, Molly’s Fair City and the Fonda Espanya.

Length of tour: 3 hours.

Includes: guided tour + 2 drinks + map.

Tour in english: Saturday at 7.30pm.

THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE IN BARCELONA

The Barri Gòtic begins in the Plaça Catalunya, the oldest square of Barcelona where, in the 13th century, one of the most flourishing markets in the city was held and slaves were once sold.

Two Romans towers that formed part of the old city walls and constituted the city's only defense until the 13th century are still to be found here.

The Palau Episcopal which rises to the right of the Roman towers also dates to the 13th century and creates an interesting contrast with the modern Col·legi d'Arquitectes, decorated on the outside with a graffito frieze designed by Picasso. To the left of the Roman towers is another interesting building, the Casa de l'Arcadia (at the present seat of the hitorical Archives of the City and the Historical Institute of Barcelona), which takes its name from the fact that it was the residence of the archdeacon. The building which is probably dates from the 11th century, was restructured throughout the centuries and is a harmonious fusion of Gothic and renaissance styles. One of the three façades of the palace looks out on the Carrer del Bisbe Irurita, the heart of the Barri Gòtic, which skirts the side of the Cathedral and ends in the Plaça Sant Jaume.

About halfway along, this lovely street is crossed by a charming suspended bridge connecting the Palau de la Generalitat to the second façade of the Casa dels Canonges.

Also this year, the festival is organized by it's neighbors together with several organizations. They'll fill the neighborhood with its rich culture and have all sorts of activities in every corner of the Raval, from the Ramblas, to their theaters and museums.

The Culture Street
Actions bastoners, Bollywood dancing, magic, capoeira, dance, and all kinds of music can be found around the streets of San Ramon and the Rambla del Raval. Alsio the Children's Workshop will be organized there.

We do miss the food side of El Raval (s) in this year's edition, although they introduced the initiative "EnTAPA't Raval". With this you can enjoy drinks and tapas for three euros at various places in the neighborhood while listening to live music. Not a bad idea, isn't it?

If you do not know the neighborhood, I suggest you participate in any of the activities with which it runs, such as Gymkhana Raval, or visit any of the organized exhibitions, such as "Photographic Memory of the Raval". You can also join one of the routes that will allow you to discover the historic buildings and the neighborhood's latest changes. Or maybe the Romanesque monastery of St. Paul? Or choose one of the museums into the neighborhood, such as the Maritime, the Royal Shipyards, the MACBA or the CCCB. Too much to see for just a few days.... Enjoy!
