THE COLUMBUS MONUMENT

The Columbus monument stands at the end of la Rambla, near the sea.

Take the lift inside the column to the viewing gallery at the top and enjoy panoramic views of Barcelona, 60 meters above the ground.

If you look north, you'll be able to make out the Gotic Quarter and the city's historic building: the bell towers of the Cathedral, Santa María del Mar and La Merçè. You'll see the bustling Rambla, which meanders up to the Plaça de Catalunya and marks the entrance to teh Eixample district, where you'll find the city's main modernista landmarks and the Sagrada Familia church.

If you look towards the sea, to the east, and follow the coastline, you'll be able to see the modern Forum district in the distance with its photovoltaic cell and tall buildings. Nearer to you, the twin towers flank the entrance to the Olympic Marina. The old harbour, or Port Vell, and the industrial port are below you at the foot of the monument.

To the south, stands Montjuïc Hill, with its castle at the top. Montjuïc is also the site of museums, gardens, theatres and the Olympic Ring. At the foot of the hill, just beyond the Reials Drassanes that house the Museu Marítim, you'll see the three chimeneys at the botoom of the Paral·lel, and avenue which is a major retail, cultural and entertainment hub.

And finally, if you look west, you'll see Collserola Natural Park, the vast green lung surrounding the city, with the Collserola Tower and the Tibidabo Amusement Park as its two stand-out attractions.

ROMANESQUE MANGER

The representation of the birth of Jesus with figures for Christmas is a long tradition in Catalonia.

Faithful to this custom, the Sant Jaume square annually hosts a Christmas crib; this is a classic in Barcelona.

This year's crib reproduces part of a romanesque chapel in ruins, with its cloister, in a very Mediterranean landscape.

You can visit it until 29 December in the lobby of the City of Barcelona located in the Plaça Sant Jaume from 11hs to 20hs.

THE CATHEDRAL SQUARE IN BARCELONA

The Barri Gòtic begins in the Plaça Catalunya, the oldest square of Barcelona where, in the 13th century, one of the most flourishing markets in the city was held and slaves were once sold.

Two Romans towers that formed part of the old city walls and constituted the city's only defense until the 13th century are still to be found here.

The Palau Episcopal which rises to the right of the Roman towers also dates to the 13th century and creates an interesting contrast with the modern Col·legi d'Arquitectes, decorated on the outside with a graffito frieze designed by Picasso. To the left of the Roman towers is another interesting building, the Casa de l'Arcadia (at the present seat of the hitorical Archives of the City and the Historical Institute of Barcelona), which takes its name from the fact that it was the residence of the archdeacon. The building which is probably dates from the 11th century, was restructured throughout the centuries and is a harmonious fusion of Gothic and renaissance styles. One of the three façades of the palace looks out on the Carrer del Bisbe Irurita, the heart of the Barri Gòtic, which skirts the side of the Cathedral and ends in the Plaça Sant Jaume.

About halfway along, this lovely street is crossed by a charming suspended bridge connecting the Palau de la Generalitat to the second façade of the Casa dels Canonges.

La Boqueria, the market in Las Ramblas

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria , often simply referred to as La Boqueria , is a large public market in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona , Catalonia , Spain and one of the city's foremost tourist landmarks, with an entrance from La Rambla , not far from the Liceu , Barcelona's opera house. The market has a very diverse selection of goods.

Construction began on March 19, 1840 under the direction of the architect Mas Vilà . The market officially opened in the same year, but the plans for the building were modified many times. The inauguration of the structure finally took place in 1853. A new fish market opened in 1911, and the metal roof that still exists today was constructed in 1914.

The commercial supply is in abundance and varies greatly: fresh fish and seafood; salty fish; tinned food; butchery and offal; birds; game and eggs; fruits and vegetables; herbs; delicatessen; breads and pastries; restaurants; frozen items; artisan products; charcuterie; farmers' shops; wine; and even a Greek and an Italian hand made pasta stall have joined the consortium/maelstrom that keeps La Boqueria alive. After all, the market is all about its people!

FC Barcelona wins Osasuna and re-establishes it’s pride

True, the FC Barcelona environment was a bit upset over the critics after the two draws against Real Sociedad and AC Milan. Winning so much –FCB won 12 of the 15 possible cups during the last 3 years- puts the pressure in each game. Noblesse oblige. And the press here in Barcelona quickly talk about a crisis. After all its their job to sell newspapers.

All usual, the answer to these types of situations takes approximately 90 minutes. Or two times 45 if you like. And what an answer it was! A fluid FCB showed why they are the best of the world. The combinations between Messi, Cesc, Thiago, Villa, Pedro, Xavi and their compañeros were as fast as lightning and left the Osasuna defense without answer. Poor Osasuna, they were just in the wrong place on the wrong moment. Poor press also, now they have to find a different story!

Orxata of Xufa: the quintessential summer drink

The horchata (in Català: Orxata of Xufa) is a refreshing drink, prepared with water, sugar and groundnuts. The groundnuts are small underground tubers shaped knots that come from the roots of the sedge countersunk called for the shape of its fruit-like hazelnut.

There is a story which explains the name given to this drink. The story says a villager led the king of the Crown of Aragon some horchata. The king dazzled the taste and asked what it meant. The girl replied that it was groundnut milk (llet of Xufa in Català), the name was known drink. The king said, "Aixó no es llet, Aixó es OR, XATA!" that means: "This is not milk, this is gold, honey!". It caused a pun on "OR" and "XATA" giving the supposed origin to the word "orxata" way to write in that language.

You have to teasted!
