What to do for New Years eve in Barcelona?

If you are in Barcelona during the New Year’s eve, we suggest some ideas about where to go.

Go to a restaurante can be a nice idea, but you have to know that so many people celebrate the New year in Barcelona in restaurantes. for that we recommend to make a reservation before.
Some good resturantes near our Bed and Breakfast can be a nice choose for this special night:

Near BBB - Jardinets we recommended:
El Rústico in Terol street number 39 in Gracia
L'Anxoveta in Sant Domènec street number 16 in Gracia

Near BBB - Casanova can be:
Vinya-Roel in Villaroel street number 190 in Eixample
El Velodromo in Muntaner street corner with Passatge Pellicer in Eixample

Close to Casa Maca:
Club Solo in Passatge Concepció in Eixample
La Musclería in Bruc street corner with Mallorca street in Eixample

At 12 o’clock everyone eats 12 grapes at every ring of the clock at midnight and if you do it succesfully, you can make a wish for New Year.

This year, the weather help to spend the time waiting for the New Year on the street, the people meet every year in Plaça Catalunya or Plaça Reial to eat the grapes and say hello to 2012. Don't forget to bring the cava and the grapes!

After that, everything are in your hands! All the bars and clubs will be open, full of people, you only have to choose one!

Some suggestions:

Razzmatazz
Sala Apolo
Harlem Jazz Club
Shoko

We wish you a Happy New Year!

Hospital Sant Pau, a beautiful example of modernist architecture

The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau dates from the year 1401, when the six existing hospitals in Barcelona merged. This is how the Hospital de la Santa Creu was born. At the end of the 19th Century, as a result of the growth of the city and breakthroughs in medicine, the Hospital had become too small and a construction on a new building was considered.

There is a Modernism Route Information Desk at Sant Pau open from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm, Monday to Sunday. Information is available on activities related to modernist heritage in general, and about the architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner in particular.

The Sant Pau Hospital is open for guided tours from
Monday to Sunday in several languages: .
10.00 am (English), 10.30 am (French), 11.00 am (English), 11.30 am (Spanish),
12.00 noon (English), 12.30 pm (Catalan) and 1.00 pm (English).

The Hospital is close to sagrada familia, located in Modernist Centre
C. Sant Antoni Maria Claret number 167

Artists jewelry in exhibition

The approach by artists to the world of jewellery is the central theme of this exhibition. In it you can admire more than 300 works by Catalan as well as international artists who led the different trends that proliferated during the fertile 20th century.
The MNAC has gathered original designs by Hector Guimard, Josep Llimona, Manolo Hugué, Pablo Gargallo, Salvador Dalí, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso and others.

The items of jewellery being exhibited give us a picture in small format of the artistic character of their creators and at the same time strike a dialogue with other works by them (paintings, sculptures, photographs, fabrics and art objects), thereby highlighting this less well known facet and creating an interdisciplinary exchange amongst the arts.

Date: from 27th of October to 13rd of February 2011 in the MNAC (Plaça Espanya)
Price: € 5.50

Fideua the Catalan's paella

What is it the Fideuá??
The history say that around the year 1930 in a small city near Valencia, a novice sailor who was cooking rice for some fishermen, changed the rice to noodles so that his boss would eat less. The boss ate so much that he often left the others hungry. All liked the new recipe so much that the idea ran from house to house making way for the fame the recipe has today.

The dish is typical for thursdays and served in most restaurants with 'ali-oli', a mixture of mayonese with garlic.

What do you need?
Garlic
Onion
Pepper
Peeled shrimps
Mussels (shelled)
Sea sticks
Noodles
Cod

Get to work!
Put a little oil in a pan and let it heat. Add a chopped garlic, onion and pepper and fry until it has a goldish color. Then add the peeled prawns, mussels and sea sticks. Let it cook for about 5 minutes and then add the noodles and allow them to absorb the liquid. Finally add the cod and let it heat for a few minutes. Then...serve!

La Rambla

Until 1854, the year in which Barcelona finally broke through its city walls, La Rambla, was used to be only one wide street at the heart of the city, an old stream whose name, according to popular belief, derives from the Arabic ramla, meaning "sandy ground".

The Rambla was merely a path beside a stream running between convents on one side and the old city walls on the other. It was in 1704 that the first houses were built on the site of the old city walls, and the first trees were planted. In 1775 the old city walls by the Drassanes, or medieval shipyards, were demolished and a few years later a road was laid turning that part of the Rambla into a tree-lined avenue.

From the upper end, which runs into Plaça de Catalunya, to the lower end below the Columbus monument, this unique street in fact bears five names, each describing a section of the street. The most important is the first one: there is the Rambla de Canaletes, because of the Font de les Canaletes fountain, found there since ancient times: folk tradition has it that anyone who drinks from this fountain will keep returning to Barcelona.

Sagrada Familia

The expiatory church of La Sagrada Família is a work on a grand scale which was begun on 1882. At the end of 1883 Gaudí was commissioned to carry on the works, a task which he did not abandon until his death in 1926. Since then different architects have continued the work after his original idea.

It has always been an expiatory church, which means that since the outset, 125 years ago now, it has been built from donations. The building is still going on and could be finished some time in the first third of the 21st century.

The normal tiquet cost 12,00€ and the tiquet to visit the church and the museum cost 14,00€

It's open from:

October to March, 9.00 to 18.00 h
April to September, 9.00 to 20.00 h
* 25 and 26 December – 1 and 6 January, 9.00 to 14.00 h

Asia Festival

The Asia Festival comes back for another year with a wide range of high quality events that share billing with initiatives of the Asian communities living in Catalonia.

The stars of this year’s festival are three productions that will come to our city for the first time: kathakali theatre from India; Shan Ren Band, the young rock group from China; and the spectacular performance by the Japanese percussionist Leonard Eto.

Moreover, the concert by the Pakistani pop singer Abrar-ul-Haq was specifically requested by the Asian community itself.

These fascinating shows are complemented by a long list of activities, organised with associations and people from Asian communities, which will take place in the framework of La Mercè Festival: a catwalk of dress and customs, playing games such as Ki-o-rahi from New Zealand, or the workshop of tastes and knowledge where we will discover the secrets of Asian cuisine.

The festival is between 16th to 26th of September in Casa Asia. It's located very close form our B&B in Av. Diagonal, 373.

Cathedral of Barcelona

The earliest origins of Barcelona Cathedral date back to a basilica with three naves, destroyed by Al-Mansur in 925. The remains of this basilica can be seen at the City History Museum. Around 1046, Bishop Guislabert pushed for the construction of a new cathedral. There are hardly any references to this cathedral. It is believed to have occupied part of the Gothic building but all that has been preserved is Romanesque.

Building work began in 1298. The Santa Llúcia Chapel, built in a late Romanesque style, already existed. Construction was very slow: the Crypt of Saint Eulalia and the choir-stall are from the end of the 14th century; the cloister from the 15th century and the retrochoir and the organ from the 16th century. The façade was finally finished in the early 20th century. Rather than Catalan Gothic, the style is Nordic Gothic. The façade is 70 metres high and crowned with an image of Saint Helena.

In the cloisters, for Corpus Christi, there is a typically Barcelonian custom: "l'ou com balla" where an egg is put into the jet of water in the cloister garden fountain to make it "dance". There is also a pond with thirteen white geese. Always thirteen, because that is how old Saint Eulalia was when, according to legend, she was martyred.

The Feast of La Merçè

The celebrations to mark the Feast of La Merçè will take place on 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th of September. This year there will be new events and entertainments that combine the tradition of a festival dating back centuries and the innovations of the digital word.

This year's guest city will be Dakar, and the Museum Marítim and the Parc de la Ciutadella will be hosting a wide range of events, entertainments and film screenings devoted to the Senegalese capital and its culture.

For first time, the Parc de la Ciutadella will be the setting for a new initiative which you can take part in, and which will fill the festival nights with the light, colour, and entertainments associated with the new technologies.

The sky will be filled with firework displays; the streets will host parades of "giants" and "big heads"; demons and dragons will invade the pavements, the square will be filled with dancing to the sound of orchestras...This is La Merçè!

Outdoor cinema

This year the CCCB organizes other days of outdoor cinema to enjoy the cool of the evening.
Like they explain in their website:

"More than ever Gandules 2010 is full of fiction: lost, aimless characters, endless searches, journeys to the unknown... The cinema has often shown labyrinths and has made them explicit. But this cycle drives us through other labyrinths, those that are often unseen: the invisible labyrinths that lock individuals in social circles, or the imaginary ones that create desires and mental escapes. What does it happen when the labyrinth is not an image, but a state?

Lost, lost, lost is a cycle about the desire for movement: get out of a place, escape, change or get transformed, conceive another world. Because what is important may not be to chose the wrong path, but the possibility to start a new one. "

The next 3, 4, 5, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26 of August always at 22hs you can enjoy this special plan.

Eixample is 'hip'

Recently an article in the Dutch fashion-and lifestyle magazine 'red' described with great enthousiasm the neighborhoud "Eixample" in Barcelona. Literally the 'barrio' was described as the hippest of all in Barcelona.

"Eixample" simply means "extension" in the local catalan language. This neighborhoud was designed already some time ago, the late 19th century, by Ildefons Cerdá. The typical octoganal blocks give more visibility and ventilation at the street crossings although these days this is quit succesfully ruined by parkings... Most of the beautiful modernistic buildings were built in the barrio Eixample, absolutely worthwhile to walk through on a sunny day!

Colonia Guell

The Colònia Güell was first set up in 1890 on the initiative of Eusebi Güell, a businessman, at his Can Soler de la Torre estate, in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, where he moved his textile busines from Sants, now part of Barcelona.

Social conflicts in Barcelona at that time led him to set up the new factory equipped with the latest technology- outside the city on a model industrial estate, with the workers’ houses alongside the factory, forming an urban complex with its own character, and social and economic life, supervised by the company.

Unlike the majority of industrial estate owners in Catalonia, Eusebi Güell improved social conditions for is workers and sponsored cultural activities. He provided cultural and religious amenities at the Colònia Güell, which were built in the current Modernista style by various architects whomhe commissioned, notably Antoni Gaudí, who was responsible for the church.

The talent of master builders is also displayed on many buildings, which is particularly evident in the variety of cornices and details on the facades.

Barcelona, like every cosmopolita and touristic city, can be expensive and difficult to park your car. Anyway, if you decide to come by car, there are some points to keep in mind:

- If your car is registered abroad, it is more a target for thieves. In this case we advise you not to leave valuable stuff inside de car, and drive with the doors closed (locked), including trunk.

Just a 50 meteres to our Bed and Breakfasts you can find a public parking. can cost around 24-25€/day. Sant Jordi a Barcelona the 24th of April

Like every year in Catalunya, and of course in Barcelona as well, the famous feast of Sant Jordi will be held on 23 and 24 of April. The city will be full of books and flowers. Tradition says that the men should give the women a rose and the woman a book to the men.

Some history:

Sant Jordi, knight and martyr, is the hero of a great history situated around the Montblanc.

A fierce and terrible monster was reacvhing the outskirts Montblanc, which had the powers to walk, fly and swing and to kill all breating beings.

The people thought that if they'd offer this monster each day a living person, it would not ruin right and left at will. Every day they picked at random a persom amongst all residents of the town, and that person would be delivered to the beast. This went on for a while and the monster was satisfied.
One day the fate wanted it to be the daugther of the king to be offered to the monster. There were citizens who volunteered to replace her, but the king was inexorable and severe, and with a heart full of grief he told his people that his daughter was also a resident of the town and would thus serve to offer to the beast. And so the princess was to be sacrified.

The girl was out the town and started walking toward the monster's lair. After some walking a young knight riding a white horse and golden armor presented himself to her. The princess told him to flee quickly since there was a fierce beast that wanted to eat all. The gentleman told her not to fea, as he had come for the purpose to fight the monster, kill him and liberate the princess -and all the citizens of Montblanc of this faith.
When the beast came, the princess was terrified though the knight felt stronger than ever, especially as he was defending this princess. The knight launced his spade and badly hurt the monster, bleeding him slowly and painfully to a miserable death. The knight, whos name was Jordi, tied the beast by the neck with a rope and returned with the princess and his prey to Montblanc. The king, so happy with the return of his daughter, offered the knight the hand of his daughter but Knight Jordi replied that he did not deserve such honor.

Then, Knight Jordi mysteriously disappeared, just he had appeared. Since then he lives in the heart of all Catalan people as Sant Jordi.
